COVID Update For Families

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing today to ask for your help.  The number of student COVID cases, as well as the number of students who are required to self-quarantine from close contact, has suddenly spiked in the last week (16 confirmed student cases).  I know we all share the same goal – keeping students in school with their teachers in a safe and healthy environment.  In order to sustain the learning environment in the Yellow Level of Operation, we need to work together to encourage our students to follow precautionary measures to keep our schools open.  While we certainly ask students to adhere to the expectations outlined in the LJSD Reopen Plan (maintain social distance of 6 feet or follow the recommendation to wear a mask if you are unable to do so and wash your hands often), kids listen and trust their parents and we would really appreciate your help in reinforcing the “why” with your kids.  We want all students to have the option of daily in-person learning (staying in Yellow), as well as participation in athletic events, graduation, prom, etc.  Thank you for helping us remind students of the expectations which will help keep our schools safe.  We know this will take all of us working together and we appreciate your support and understanding.

Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

What is Contact Tracing and How Does it Work?

With the recent surge in the number of people testing positive for COVID-19, there have been several questions surrounding contact tracing. What does contact tracing really mean?

Contact tracing is the process used to understand how an infectious disease is spreading in our community. The purpose of contact tracing is threefold: to find out how an individual became sick, find out who else might have been exposed, and protect others from being infected.

In order to keep our students and staff safe, our School Nurse team works tirelessly to conduct effective contact tracing.  When we have individuals who have tested positive or have been in close contact with anyone who tested positive within our schools, the nurses notify these individuals and advise them on how to move forward.

Schools cannot and will not release information regarding positive students if that individual could be identified through an announcement.

Per Idaho laws, the Health District is required to notify schools of positive cases among students or staff. Health Districts are also required to notify the school of close contacts of confirmed positive cases if those close contacts attend that school.

Updated Definition of “Close Contact” from CDC

Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.

Fall is Here!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Now that we are settled into the routine of school again, we can take a deep breath and look back at the amazing start to our school year!  I am so proud of our staff and all they have collectively done to maintain stability and a welcoming environment for our students, despite the very real challenges posed by the Covid, social distancing, etc.  As parents, I know how much you value  the dedication and compassion our staff demonstrates on a daily basis for our Lakeland family.  The 2020 parent survey you just completed showed that once again, our parents value our teachers and staff first and foremost, followed by overall district functioning and the family atmosphere.  Thank you for giving us your feedback – I have linked in the survey results below for your information.  We know this has been an extremely challenging time for everyone as we navigate a worldwide pandemic, and we certainly have areas to improve upon to better serve our families, but we are reminded of the reason the Lakeland District Family is SO strong — your comments reinforced the fact that we are only going to get through this TOGETHER 😁💖.  Thank you for being a flexible and supportive part of our school community, while simultaneously holding us to the high standards you expect from the District.  Your feedback is invaluable and very much appreciated.  Much Gratitude as we head into the month of appreciating our blessings (November), Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

September Success!

A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have had a wonderful first month with students – to have smiling faces and eager young minds back in the schools has been so refreshing.  While we are aware there are still challenges to overcome in this new learning environment, the focus is back where it should be:  students learning and growing every day.  As I have visited every classroom in the district, the recurring theme I have seen is that staff and students have found a rhythm and are genuinely happy to be back in the swing of school. They love to be around their peers and enjoy the opportunity for social interaction.  Though social distancing is not popular with the students, they have been great at following the required protocols. I am always so impressed with the level of kindness and respect the students in this district display.  A new employee who joined us from another state recently told me, “I just cannot believe how nice these students are; it is unbelievable.”  We should be so proud of our kids – they are good human beings and are working to be part of the solution to a once in a lifetime problem!  Much Gratitude to our wonderful students in this district and your positive parenting influence, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

September Fun!

The beginning of this school year has been unlike any we have seen.  What started as uncertainty has evolved into a very happy student body that is excited to be back to school.  Moving into Fall weather we would like to remind our families to plan for cool mornings that may require an extra layer of clothing.  The month of October will start with two staff professional learning days, which are non-student days, and then our students will move deeper into a school year of exciting growth and learning.

Nutrition Services

Our Nutrition Services Team continues to work so hard for our students.  Free breakfast and lunch continues to be available for all children Monday-Friday.  This program is expected to continue through the month of December.  If you have a student that attends school via the Lakeland Online Academy, you can still pick up free breakfast and lunch daily at our two designated sites.  Breakfast and lunch will not be available on non-school days.  Go to the Nutrition Services page on the District website for more details. Check out the info below!

Donations to the District

This month has showed our District just how generous the community is.  We have received much needed donations of school supplies, backpacks, headphones, water bottles and communication supplies.

Child and Adult Literacy Programs

Every year, the LJSD continues to sponsor literacy in our community.  The importance of expanding literacy skills for both adults and children is great.  On a monthly basis, the Literacy for Little Ones Program is held at the District Office.  This is a free program for preschool aged children to build their early literacy skills.  You can sign up below.  The Literacy Project also offers FREE computer classes for adults looking to increase their skills.

Kindness Shout out!

We would like to give a HUGE thank you to the Cutler Family and Mark Dane for donating 48 hand cut beams to Athol Elementary that will line the border of the new playground structure.  Peg Cutler, Amy Ballance and Lloyd Moe hand stained every beam and have put in hours upon hours of hard work in getting this playground ready for our students this year. This District thrives on the incredible support we have from our community members!

First Week of School Success!

It was wonderful to have the students back in school this week — young minds eager to learn and glad to be back into the school environment.  As I went through every school this week, what I noticed most was the resiliency of our students.  They seamlessly eased back into the school routines and shared their joy effortlessly.  It was apparent that getting back to some sense of normalcy, while it will not happen overnight, is important for everyone.

As you know, we opened the District this week in the Yellow Level of Operation, as outlined in the LJSD #272 Fall 2020 Reopen Plan.  The plan requires social distancing to the greatest extent possible and allows for desks to be arranged in cohort groups (pods) as necessary.  The pod system is a table group that sits together and is distanced six feet away from the next pod.  Several classrooms throughout the district will be arranged in the pod system to enable consistent student groups (cohorts) to work together, as well as allow for the classroom to remain in one location without moving to a larger space.  Our goal is to stay in the Yellow Level so that all students and staff will remain together in the classroom learning environment.

Our Lakeland Online Academy is off to a great start with nearly 300 K- 8 students and 60 students in the High School Online Plato program.  If your family has concerns about the in-person learning environment under the present circumstances, this is an excellent pathway to ensure a solid educational experience while remaining a Lakeland Jt. School District student.  It is not too late to enroll in an online program.  If you would like more information, click here

Unfortunately, the wildfire smoke has added another element of concern as we prepare to start week two of our school year.   We receive daily air quality updates and forecasts from the Department of Environmental Quality and will maintain precautionary measures, along with restricting outdoor activities, as prescribed.  We will continue to monitor air quality, but the forecast for tomorrow calls for indoor activities.  Continue to monitor your child’s health at home every morning and do not send them to school if they show any symptoms of illness (Checklist).  Ensure your school knows of any special requirements for your child.  The CDC site has information on wildfire smoke and Covid

I continue to pray that our students and staff remain healthy so we can stay in school together.  It seems that flexibility is key, along with our ability to show grace and compassion as we face new challenges every day in this ever-changing environment.  Thank you for your continued support, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Nutrition Services

Update! Free Grab & Go Meals have been extended.  This program may run through the end of December as long as funding is available.  Our Nutrition Services Team will have two curbside pick-up locations Monday-Friday, starting September 14 for on-line learners and community children 18 years and younger. A breakfast and lunch will be given to each child.  Pick-up times at Timberlake High School are from 12:15-12:30 and LJHS from 12:45 to 1:00. Children do not need to be present for curbside pick-up as long as a Parent or Legal Guardian is picking up the meals.
A reminder to Parents and Guardians, please continue to fill out your Free and Reduced applications. Once the Grab & Go free meal program ends we will revert back to the NSLP program and want to make sure these benefits are available.

Technology

Do you still have a Chromebook checked out from the Spring Semester?  If you do, this device must be turned in for updates from our tech team and it can then be checked out again to your student.  Don’t forget to check out the LJSD Digital Resources Webpage for families to help guide you through using your device.

September is Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month

Covid-19 has changed our lives in many ways and our mental health should always be a top priority.  The LJSD will continue to focus on providing social-emotional learning and growth for our students throughout the year.  Along with our secondary schools, elementary students will now have the opportunity to participate in the Sources of Strength program, thanks to a grant the Elementary Counselors wrote and received.  Along with supports in our schools, please know there are many local, state, and national resources available (links below).  Please let us know if we can offer assistance or provide additional support for your family – we are here to help.

Let’s Get Ready for School!

Dear Parents and Guardians – there is SO much going on right now and we understand parents have tough choices to make about what learning environment is best for each of your children. We realize there are a variety of differing perspectives and comfort level with the District’s Reopen Plan and the Yellow Level of Operation the Board voted to begin our school year in.  What remains unchanged is the love and care we have for each of our students.  I can promise you that our staff has worked countless hours preparing for the students to return – they are excited and anxious to start the year.  Our plan is to provide a quality learning environment, no matter the color level.  Please know that we support your right to make the best decision for your child’s learning and we hope we can be part of that team this year.  Thank you for your continued support and encouragement – we are EXTREMELY excited to welcome our students back, whether in person or online, on September 8, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Have you Registered Yet?

If you have not already completed registration for either In-Person schooling or the Lakeland Online Academy, we ask that you please do so as soon as possible.  This will help our schools with scheduling and planning for the quickly approaching school year.

Opening in Yellow

The first day of school is Tuesday, September 8, 2020.  In the Yellow Level of Operation, LJSD students will attend school 5 days/week in-person (Monday through Friday) with a 1-hour early release schedule daily.  In order to allow for greater social distancing, there will be no prep periods during the student contact time and all staff preparation time is built into the end of each day.  Face coverings (masks/shields) will be recommended where social distancing cannot be maintained.  We truly heard how difficult remote learning was for families last spring, so our goal is to keep schools open in Yellow Level for as long as possible.  We need parents’ help –  please read and assist us with the guidelines in “Keeping our Students Healthy” below.  Together, we can keep kids in school!

Keeping our Students Healthy

Lakeland Joint School District school health services are looking forward to students returning to school.   This year in addition to the general illness guidelines,  we will be addressing COVID-19.   This virus shows no boundaries.  It will take all of us working together to get our schools back to “normal” for you, your children, and the school district staff.

What you can do to help:

  • Please do a simple health screening of your child daily before school: How-To  At this time the Center  for Disease Control does not currently recommend that schools conduct universal symptom screening (screening all students as they arrive at school).
  • Please keep your child home from school if you answer yes to any symptoms in Section 1.
  • Please do not send your child to school and notify us if your child has a positive COVID-19 test, symptoms of COVID-19, or they were exposed to someone with COVID-19 within the last 14 days.

What the school district will do to help:

  • If your child has symptoms of COVID-19 at school, your child will be isolated and you will be notified to pick your child up from school.  (per CDC guidelines).  It is very important that the school has up to date contact information for all parent/guardians.  In addition, the school needs at least one other contact person to call in the event that you are not available (this will be the emergency contact in Skyward when you register).
  • We will advise sick staff or students not to return until they have met CDC criteria to discontinue home isolation.
  • When the District learns of a student or staff who has tested positive for COVID-19, has had contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is showing symptoms of COVID-19, the school district health services team will:
  1. Respond and determine an appropriate course of action
  2. Isolate and send ill students or staff home
  3. Communicate with all affected individuals and initiate contact tracing
  4. Contact Panhandle Health District and coordinate necessary steps to protect the school population

Internet Options

We realize that for some families, internet connectivity is a challenge.  There are several options available to work through this obstacle:

  • Home Internet Options and Resources
  • A limited number of hotspots will be available
  • Families will have access to internet in the parking lot of every school
  • We have 3 buses with mobile hotspots that will be staged in rural areas of our district for families to access wifi by parking next to the bus
  • Google Classroom platform allows students to work offline while at home and then the student will be able to download all work and capture new assignments when they hook up to wifi at the school or a mobile hotspot
  • Local restaurants and libraries have free wifi – check out your local area

Nutrition Services Plan

With Lakeland schools opening in the Yellow Level on September 8, we want families to be able to plan for what breakfast and lunch services will look like.  Our Nutrition Services Team has a detailed plan to help students prepare for the upcoming start of school.

Student Transportation

Our Lakeland Transportation Team is gearing up for a new school year.  If your family will be using our bus transportation, we ask that you please complete the Lakeland Schools – Request for Transportation 2020-21 School Year Form.

  • Student bus route information can be found on Skyward Family Access under the Bus Transportation section
  • If your students bus transportation information is missing or incorrect, please contact our Transportation Department at 208-687-0221

Let’s Get Ready for School!

As the beginning of our new school year draws closer, please know that we are sharing information about our reopening plan as quickly as we can based on decisions our Board is making.  We understand that our families need a clear understanding of what school will look like in order to make the best decisions about the education of their children.  In that same vein, we are in need of some information from our families that will assist us with appropriately preparing for our fall reopening.  We need to get a better sense of how many parents will choose for their child(ren) to start the year at school with in-person learning and how many will start in Lakeland Online Academy.  Below, we have included both ways to register your child(ren) for school:

Please choose one option below

  1. Register your child(ren) for in-person school (even if you have previously completed pre-registration,  you will need to review your registration & answer a few questions in order to complete the registration process to ensure we have the most up to date information).

        2. Enroll your child(ren) for online school in the newly created Lakeland Online Academy (This is a new option for those not wishing to have their child(ren) attend in person schooling.  You do not need to register for the Online Academy if your child(ren) will attend in person this year)

We understand circumstances are fluctuating and may change before school begins. Based on your family’s circumstances, parents will have the option to change student placement as the year progresses.  The 2020-21 school year will require all of us to be flexible as we navigate this pandemic.  Thank you for taking a few minutes to complete one of the two registration processes above so we can ensure we are prepared for the fall reopen.  We know this is a difficult time for parents as you decide what is best for your child(ren).  Your child’s academic, social-emotional, and behavioral growth and development is our highest priority and it will take all of us working together to ensure that we provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our staff and students this year.  Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education!  Together, we are a strong team.  In partnership, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Lakeland Back to School Reopening, Online Academy, and More…

Understandably, there have been a lot of questions and concerns about reopening schools in the fall.  I have received several emails about information posted on social media as parents attempt to distinguish truth from rumors.  It is vital for you to have the facts when making decisions surrounding the education of your child(ren) and the only way to do that is to go to the source.  Please reach out to us at: 208-687-0431 or info@lakeland272.org — We are happy to answer any questions and often can clear up misunderstandings with one phone call.  I have addressed the most frequently asked questions below, but please contact us for additional clarifications.

  • Can the school district remove a student from school without contacting parents?
    • Absolutely not –  we will never move or relocate students without notifying parents.  Even in the event of a school evacuation, our protocol requires the Superintendent notify parents of the location where the students are being transported and how the reunification plan will proceed.
  • If a student is feeling ill, will they automatically be quarantined?
    • No – School Nurses will take the students temperature and ask them questions about symptoms, just like we normally do when a student shares that they feel ill.  Parents will be called if the student needs to be picked up to go home because they are not feeling well.
  • If a student within your son/daughter’s classroom tests positive for Covid, can someone come into the classroom and administer a Covid test without parent permission?
    • Absolutely not. ONLY parents can give permission to test their child(ren) and the district will NOT be administering tests at schools.
  • I heard masks WILL be mandatory.
    • Masks are NOT mandatory in our district.  The Board approved Reopen Plan states, “Face coverings (masks/shields) will be recommended where social distancing cannot be maintained.”
  • Will students have their temperature taken daily and reported to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Panhandle Health District (PHD)?
    • NO.  We are asking parents to take the temperature of their child(ren) at home and keep them home if it is elevated.  School Nurses will only be taking the temperature of kids who state they are feeling ill and reporting that to the parents.  We will not be sharing student temperatures with either the CDC or PHD.
  • If a student is diagnosed with Covid in your child’s class, can siblings be removed and taken into quarantine away from their family for two weeks?
    • Absolutely not – ONLY parents, or their pre-approved emergency contacts in Skyward, will be allowed to remove their child(ren) from school.

We are here to protect and provide education for your child(ren) while they are at school.  We cannot successfully do this without a parent-school partnership.  Consistent communication will be even more important than ever in these ever changing circumstances. We pledge to keep parents well informed; we know and honor that the ultimate responsibility for all students rests with the parents.  Please take the time to reach out with any additional questions or concerns you may have as we move closer to the beginning of school.  The Board will be reviewing the LJSD Fall 2020 Reopen Plan at the August 11 and August 25 Board meeting to determine if any portion needs to be updated due to our community’s circumstances.  The Board values parent input and I encourage you to contact them (contact info is on the website) with any feedback you wish to provide. Thank you for being a partner in your child(ren)’s education and for taking the time to learn the facts – we appreciate your support, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Lakeland Online Academy

We know that families are anxious to plan for the start of school and we are excited to see our students again!  Beginning this year, we are introducing the Lakeland Online Academy to give our families more flexibility in our busy world.  We would like to get a sense of how many of our parents are interested in this educational option for their child(ren).  Please take a moment to answer the short survey found HERE. The information gathered will enable us to be fully prepared for the fall.

What Color Are We In?

One of the top questions on parent’s minds is which color of our LJSD Reopen Plan are we in?  On August 5, Panhandle Health District released their community spread categories, which will be updated each week.  The press release can be found below.

Panhandle Health District provides community spread categories for school districts in response to COVID-19

This week, Panhandle Health District (PHD) began its official weekly assessment and reporting of categories of community spread for use by school districts in Kootenai, Bonner, Benewah, Boundary, and Shoshone Counties in their decision-making processes and operations for COVID-19. The categories are defined in the Idaho Back to School Framework, as approved by the State Board of Education in early July, and indicate what level of in-person learning and response is recommended.

The categories referenced below are only recommendations for the week indicated; final decisions are made by local school boards. Private and charter schools are recommended to use the category based on the address of their facility and associated school district boundary.

The metrics used to make the category determinations are based off of the Levels of Community Spread for Idaho Back-to-School Framework.

[For the week of August 3, 2020]

Category 1: No Community TransmissionWeekly assessments of community spread will be updated on Thursdays at www.panhandlehealthdistrict.org/COVID-19. If category designations are adjusted, then schools and families should expect transition time as changes may or may not be immediate.

  • Category 2: Mild to Moderate Community Transmission
  • Category 3: Substantial Community Transmission

If you have questions regarding COVID-19 in our area, call the Panhandle Health District hotline at 877-415-5225. The hotline is open Monday-Friday, 8am – 5pm. Preparing for Back to School

How will school look in the fall?  This is the question at the forefront of all of our minds.  This past week, our Board of Trustees approved the LJSD Fall Reopen Plan at their Board meeting.  If you missed Tuesday’s meeting and are interested in hearing the Trustees’ discussion on the Reopen Plan, please click HERE.  The Fall Reopen Plan can be viewed HERE.  Although the plan was approved on Tuesday, our Board realizes circumstances may change in our community, so they are planning on revisiting the Reopen Plan at the August 11 and August 25 Board meeting to ensure the plan addresses the most current district circumstances.  It is understandable that families still have many questions in this unprecedented and fluctuating time.  While we do not have all of the answers, we are working hard to refine our plans at each school and plan to update families regularly as new information becomes available.  The most important thing to remember is that our mission remains our mission – we want to ensure we are meeting the needs of each individual student and provide them with an opportunity to grow every day.  Our plans support this mission and we will do whatever it takes to ensure your child(ren) have a solid educational platform in this new frontier.  Thank you for your patience as we move forward through this together, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

In Person and Online Update from Assistant Superintendent, Lisa Sexton

After the approval of the Reopen Plan on July 28th, the real work now begins; the addition of school specific details.  We know that face-to-face interactive teaching and learning is best for our students.  However, we also understand that each family has to decide what works best for them and their children.  We are entering uncharted territory as we plan for schools to open on September 8th.  The plan the Board approved is fluid and allows us to move through phases as we respond to the spread of COVID-19 within our communities; one school at a time.  We are using what we learned from last spring and are working to ensure that we are able to provide the high quality education our parents expect from us.  New this year will be a fully online learning platform.  We are reviewing model programs to ensure that we have the best possible learning experience for our students.  We will continue to update you as this platform takes shape. An online sign-up form will be going out to all parents next week to gauge interest levels.  We appreciate your support through these challenging times!  Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education.  Together we make a wonderful team!

Before and After School Enrichment Program

Our BASE Program is working on a plan to provide before and after school care for our District students, as well as full day childcare for our new schedule that aligns with our Board-approved Reopen Plan.  Keep an eye on the District website for coming information regarding registration.

Social Emotional Health

In preparing for the School Year, we want to support our Lakeland Families by helping you to talk to your children about the year ahead.  Patty Morrison, our Federal Programs Director, would like to share with families this helpful information on preparing children for back to school.

August is almost here, (and if they haven’t already) children are now asking, “When do we go back to school?”  This question could be asked with a feeling of boredom, excitement, anxiety, or even confusion given all the information that surrounds this pandemic.

Here are some great ideas from a mental health company “Nip in the Bud” with a video explaining how children may be feeling and tips for how to hold healthy conversations.

A helpful “fact sheet” with reminders for tackling conversations is included.  These tips can help all of us as we create a positive start to a new school year with Lakeland students!

Grab & Go Meals

The incredibly important seven day a week Grab & Go Meal Program will continue until August 14 at all of our regular locations.  As a reminder, our Nutrition Services Team provides free breakfast and lunch for all children in our communities, up to 18 years old.

Did you Check out a Chromebook Last Spring?

We have over 100 Chromebooks that have yet to be returned.  If your student checked out a Chromebook during the COVID-19 closure or for Summer School use, please ensure that device is returned as soon as possible.  Each device will need to be cleaned and updated to the latest software version.  To return your Chromebook device, please call the Technology Department at (208) 687-4350 to arrange a drop off time.

Planning for Fall

Last week we held Community Update Meetings at Lakeland High School and Timberlake Junior High School to update parents on the current state of our district and explain next steps in planning for this coming fall.  If you missed these community meetings, you can check out the recording below along with the presentation.

As we head into July, the District team has been working daily to plan for how the beginning of the school year will look.  Guidance from the state level is expected to be released to districts in the coming week.  The District will be sending out a questionnaire to all parents next week to ensure you have ample opportunity to share your input and unique perspectives.  Using the official guidance from the State, along with parent input, our local Board of Trustees will work to finalize a comprehensive plan for our students to return to school.  As this plan forms, we will keep parents informed on a regular basis.  Thank you for your continued support – have a very fun and family-oriented 4th of July as we celebrate the birth of our great nation!  Thanks, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Grab & Go Meals Update for the Holiday Weekend

On Thursday, July 2, our Nutrition Services Team will hand out four days worth of meals to children. There will be no meals served on Friday, July 3.

Graduation Success!

We want to congratulate all of our seniors on successfully completing one of the most unique school years that anyone can remember.  The drive in graduation ceremonies held at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds were incredible and we were able to give seniors the awesome send-off they deserved.  Please join us in congratulating our seniors!!
