Welcome Back!

A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are so excited to welcome you back to the 2021-22 school year! We anticipate much joy as our students meet their new teachers, settle back into the school routines, reacquaint themselves with their peers, and join one of the diverse extra-curricular activities open to them.  This stability and structure will do wonders for kids!  Our daily focus is to assist every student to maximize their learning and make measurable growth as we individually work with students to address unfinished or gaps in learning stemming from the Covid pandemic.  We are prepared to meet students where they are at and move them forward in collaboration with our parents. It has been a unique 1 ½ years and it will take a team effort to ensure we address any learning gaps for our students in a meaningful and individualized manner.  We have the greatest staff in the state and they truly believe your kids deserve our best — EVERY student matters!

Thank you for your continued support of our staff and our mission, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Junior Highs No More

Over the past two years, the District has been planning the transition for our junior high schools to become middle schools.  So what is the difference?  Traditionally, our 6th grade students have been housed at the elementary schools and our junior highs housed our 7th and 8th graders.  In the past two years, we have slowly incorporated some of our 6th grade classes into the junior highs and this school year, all 6th graders will be at the junior high schools, which will now be official middle schools.  There are many benefits to adding 6th grades to the middle level.  Students are able to spend a full three years in the middle school, form relationships with peers and staff, and slowly transition into a school where they will have a variety of classes and teachers.  The benefit to our elementary schools is that a little more room is freed up to accommodate our very quickly growing school district.  You may not have noticed yet, but Lakeland Middle School and Timberlake Middle School have new signs to celebrate this change.

Let’s get Ready for School!

A Message from Dr. Meyer, Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am so excited to welcome our students back to school on September 7 in just a few short weeks, but we need your help first.  As you may know, the 2021-22 District Operational Plan is under review by the Board of Trustees and, considering the recent uptick in cases in our county, we need your input again.  My recommendation to the Board of Trustees at their meeting last night was to open our schools in the GREEN Level of Operation.  Ideally, we would like to provide the opportunity for all students to attend in-person instruction every day, with our online program available for families that would prefer this option.  The Board asked me to add a mid-range level of operation (Orange) to the Plan, should it become necessary.  I would like to ensure we are meeting the needs of our parents, so please read the DRAFT 2021-22 LJSD #272 Operational Plan and offer comments or suggestions HERE.

In the hopes of maintaining a strong parent voice, I am hoping to have a parent volunteer from each school participate on an Advisory Subcommittee that will assist me in gathering feedback and making recommendations to the Board of Trustees as we update/modify the plan as necessary. If you are interested, please fill out the link directly below.   As always, feel free to reach out to me with questions or concerns.  I appreciate the parents in our district and your unwavering support for your child(ren)’s educational environment – Much Gratitude, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Looking for Volunteers!

The District has a need for volunteers to join our subcommittees.

  • Every six months, our Board of Trustees will review the 2021-2022 Operating Plan and a subcommittee is being formed to make recommendations for this plan.  If you would like to join this subcommittee, please fill out the form HERE.
  • We are looking for community members to join our K-8 Mathematics Instructional Materials Curricular Advisory Committee in preparation for an adoption of new math curriculum next year.  If you are interested, CLICK HERE to fill out the form

School Resource Officer Update!

We have great news!  Last night at the School Board meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between our District and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department was approved.  The MOU will ensure that we have an SRO assigned to Garwood and Twin Lakes Elementary Schools for the 2021-22 school year.  We are excited that Deputy Clausen will continue to be part of our safety team as he works with the students and staff at these two schools.  We appreciate the continued support from our District and look forward to continuing our partnership with the Sheriff’s Department!

In-Person and Online Registration

We ask all families with returning students to log into Skyward between now and August 31st to complete the online verification process. This process reduces paperwork and provides teachers with the most current contact information available for your student and helps school administrators plan classroom assignments for the upcoming school year.

Please take a moment to complete this process now. To verify, log into Skyward Family Access. Once logged in, click the “Returning Student Verification 21-22” button at left and follow the prompts.

Your guardian username is: firstnamelastname all together so Jane Doe is username: janedoe. If you do not remember your password then you can request it by clicking on the “Forgot your Login/Password?” link below the login screen.

If you have other trouble after logging in then please email: helpdesk@lakeland272.org with both your full name and one of your student’s full name so we can look up your account and help.

NOTE: New (to the District) Student Enrollment information is available here: https://www.sd272.org/parents-students/enrollment and applications are not typically approved until office staff return in mid-August.

P.S. We have on-site Registration and Enrollment available on August 18th from 9 to 4 and August 19th from 12pm to 7pm if you run into issues or would prefer that option.

School Meals

The federal fee waiver for all school meals has been extended through the coming school year. There will be no charge for breakfast or lunch for any students in 2021-22.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch Program is continuing to waive meal fees as the pandemic continues to threaten the food and nutrition security of our most vulnerable. This ensures that all students, regardless of their educational setting, have access to free, healthy meals for in-person learning.

Enjoy Your Summer!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope this June Edublog finds you and your kids resting up and enjoying time as a family as we start the 2021 summer.  Except for this week’s coming heat wave, the weather has certainly cooperated for outdoor family activities!  We are glad to have the Covid year behind us and look forward to a fresh start in fall 2021.  Thank you to our LJSD parents for your continued support and patience as we navigated through uncharted waters – your partnership is what allowed our district to keep in school all five days each week this year.  Our families definitely deserve much fun and joy in July😍!  Much Gratitude, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

Over the last month, our community has celebrated the class of 2021.  Their futures are very bright and we wish them the best in the new adventures they will begin.  Please join us in congratulating each of our seniors on this huge accomplishment!

Supplemental Resources and Classroom Materials

The Month of May

End of the Year Message from the Superintendent

Dear parents,

As we head into the home stretch of an unprecedented year, I hope our Lakeland families are as grateful as we are that school has been in session all year long.  I have been hearing from parents, students, and staff that it is refreshing to have more social interaction and opportunities to celebrate together.  We are super excited that all graduation ceremonies will be in-person this year.  I know it has been a challenging year for everyone — our world was turned upside down — so I want to remind everyone to pause and enjoy a long weekend to relax and re-energize with your kids.  The three day weekend is coming at the perfect time for our students to disconnect for a few days and gather up steam to “finish strong!”  We are looking forward to our last two weeks of school before summer arrives.  As we celebrate Memorial Day, we honor the Americans who died while serving in the U.S. military and extend a very special thank you to all military men and women, past and present, for everything you have done for our country.

Here’s to many special moments with your family this coming Memorial Day weekend,  Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

What’s Happening in the Month of May?

This is arguably one of the most exciting months of the school year.  Our seniors can see their finish line and are preparing for awesome graduation ceremonies!  Our Spring athletes are finishing up their successful seasons, State testing has wrapped up, and the weather is beautiful.  This month has been packed full of events and in just a couple short weeks, Summer Break will arrive.  Check out just a few of the May events below as well as information on Summer activities in our communities.

Inaugural Senior Signing Ceremony at Mountain View High School

On May 20, in partnership with North Idaho College Job Corps, Mountain View High School students took part in the first Senior Signing Ceremony.  Seven Mountain View seniors received scholarships to join North Idaho College’s Job Corps upon graduation from high school.  We are thankful for the support that NIC and the community shows for our Lakeland students.  The future is indeed very bright for these students!  The Coeur d’Alene Press was on hand to capture the event.  Check out the article HERE.

THS – Community Appreciation Day

If you were driving around the Twin Lakes, Spirit Lake, or Athol areas on Friday, May 28, you may have seen groups of students working to clean up the community.  In the inaugural Community Appreciation Day, over 300 Timberlake High School students and staff worked together to clean the sides of roadways, Mountain View Cemetery, city parks, and other areas.  This is a great way to show appreciation to the community they live in and the students and staff did a fantastic job!

Lakeland Graduate Success Story

Photo courtesy of the Coeur d’Alene Press

We love hearing the stories of how our graduates have found success in the world.  We would like to highlight one of our former students and the article that the Coeur d’Alene Press wrote.  Mark Schell, a former Timberlake High School student graduated from the United States Air Force Academy as a 2nd Lieutenant on May 26, 2021.  Please join us in congratulating 2nd Lieutenant Schell on this incredible accomplishment!  Read the CDA Press article HERE

Thinking Outside the Box

Recently, a tenacious group of 2nd graders at Betty Kiefer Elementary took part in a hands on surgical experiment on text.  They dissected, interacted with, found evidence, and analyzed the words in their very own surgical suite.  What an awesome, interactive way to look at words!

STEAM Camp Sign-Ups Open!

Lakeland is offering two FREE STEAM camps this summer to our students!  One will be located at Lakeland High School and one at Athol Elementary.  CLICK HERE to get started on signing up for this awesome opportunity!  Students will be exposed to a variety of classes (look below), get a t-shirt, and learn some exciting new skills.

Mountain View Students Learning Valuable Skills

Our Mountain View High School students recently participated in the 9th annual Reverse Job Fair. Students went through a rotation of seven-minute sessions with community members where they spoke about career aspirations and their plans to pursue them.   Along with helping students prepare for interviews, this is part of their senior project requirement and an important part of the process of preparing students for life after high school. The Coeur d’Alene Press printed a feature article on the Reverse Job Fair.  Click on the picture below to read more.

Happy Spring Break!

Superintendent’s message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Spring Break is even more important than ever this year – there have been so many changes and new issues that families have had to manage throughout the last year – it is time to unplug, disconnect and take a break! I hope you all find time next week to do something fun, get outdoors, play a game, and truly interact with your family🥳. As we head into the fourth quarter, I am so proud of the hard work and commitment our staff, students, and families have put in to make this such a successful year – a definite team effort!  We are extremely grateful to our community for your support of the two-year Instructional Levy, ensuring we continue with the amazing programs and services in our District.  Directly following the successful March 9 Levy vote, we held the much-anticipated Student-Led Conferences (SLC).  The parent feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and many expressed gratitude that we did not cancel the SLC’s so parents had the opportunity to hear from their kid(s).  Our students were able to successfully showcase the great work they do, as well as share growth areas and goals for the year.  We look forward to expanding the SLC’s next year to K – 10th grade.  Thank you for your support at home as we strive for every single student to grow every day – students taking responsibility for their own growth goals is a key to increasing student self-efficacy (one our District’s stated goals for our graduates)!  Have a wonderful break and enjoy Easter with your family – Much Gratitude, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Instructional Levy Passes – Thank you to the Community!

In a year of unknowns, one thing is certain.  Our students will continue to have an exceptional educational experience in the coming years.  Because of our community support, the two-year Instructional Levy has passed and our District is grateful!  We would like to extend a huge thank you to all who came out to vote on March 9th.

Parents! We Need you Input on Next Year’s School Start and End Times

Dear Parents/Guardians,
It’s hard to believe we are already heading into the last quarter of this strange and challenging school year.  As we plan for next year, we are interested in your feedback regarding the start and end times for our schools.  If you have already taken this survey, thank you so much for providing your input.  If you haven’t had a chance yet, the link to the survey is here.  We will close the survey on Wednesday, March 31.  Thank you, again, for completing the survey.  Have a wonderful Spring Break!
Warm Regards,
Lisa Sexton
Assistant Superintendent

Out Goes Winter and in Comes Spring!

As our Winter Sports Season winds down, we celebrate big wins in the District.  Lakeland High School won the coveted 4A Sportsmanship Award at the Boy’s State Basketball Tournament and were District 1 and 2 4A IEL champions.  Our Lakeland High School volleyball coach Kelsie Badger was recently named 4A State Coach of the Year, the Lakeland High School Cheer Squad was named Grand Champion for 4A High Schools and the LHS wrestlers are celebrating success at State.  As Timberlake High School wrapped up their Winter Sports Season, they are celebrating big wins as well!  Timberlake Girls won the State Basketball Championship AGAIN, the wrestling team sent 11 athletes to compete at State, and the Cheer squad celebrated a win with Grand Champion for 3A High Schools.  Our student athletes are amazing!

Thank you to our School Nurses

Our school nurses have worked tirelessly this year to keep our students safe and our parents informed.  Check out this short video and join us in thanking our school nurse team!

Student-Led Conference Success!

On March 11, our K-9th grade students took part in Student-Led Conferences to showcase the great work they have been doing throughout the school year.  SLC’s do not take the place of traditional parent-teacher conferences, but are a way for our students to take the lead in their learning.  Students share their outstanding work, improvement areas, growth goals, projects they are working on, and introduce their families to a day in their school life. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive!  Next year we will be expanding the SLC day to include 10th grade.

Studentled conferences empower students to take ownership for their own learning, authentically assess their academic, social-emotional and behavioral level of performance, and set their own growth goals. The intention is to create intrinsic motivation and boost self-confidence. SLCs improve the quality of knowledge shared, promote student responsibility, self-efficacy, ownership of learning, and help build habits of self-reflection.  For parents, an opportunity emerges to engage in richer, more transparent conversations about their child(ren)’s work and aspirations.

Vaccines Available for those 16 and Older

PANHANDLE HEALTH DISTRICT — Individuals who are 16 years of age and older are eligible to get their COVID-19 vaccine now through enrolled providers within Kootenai, Bonner, Boundary, Benewah, and Shoshone counties. Appointments for the week of March 29 were released by Panhandle Health District this Wednesday, March 24th at 0900. All previous phases are still eligible and encouraged to schedule an appointment if they have not already.

This decision comes after Governor Little made the announcement that in Idaho, those 16 years or older with an underlying health condition will be eligible to receive the vaccine beginning March 29th. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare agreed that different health districts within Idaho may choose to move through the various Group 3 Subgroups at different rates.

“After assessing the situation with our enrolled vaccine providers, we made the decision as a group to move forward in the phases,” said Don Duffy, Health Services Division Administrator for PHD. “We have the supply and available appointments, but have continued to see a decline in demand. At the end of the day, we just want to get people vaccinated who are choosing to receive a vaccine.”

Making an appointment: Online or by phone

Many providers are still utilizing their own vaccine appointment scheduling tools, while others have shifted to using the state’s pre-registry vaccine tool where eligible individuals enter their name and contact information. From the pre-registry tool, providers pull names and directly connect with the person eligible for vaccine.

If you need help by phone with navigating the online appointment scheduling or do not have internet access, PHD’s Call Center can assist you. Call 877-415-5225 Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Vaccine allocations

Weekly vaccine allocations to PHD’s jurisdiction continue to remain consistent. A total of 6,400 Moderna and Pfizer doses will go to enrolled vaccine providers in PHD’s jurisdiction. To-date, over 98,000 total vaccine doses have been allocated to PHD’s jurisdiction.

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is for persons 16 years or older. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are for persons 18 years or older. PHD will state what vaccine is being administered when individuals register for an appointment on their website.

If you have questions about COVID-19 in our area, call PHD’s COVID-19 hotline Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm, 877-415-5225.

Get Out and Vote March 9

Superintendent’s Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we finish out February and head into spring🤞🏼, I am reminded how much we have to be grateful for in our District.  We have been the only local District to keep students in school 5 days a week this entire year!  Our District’s Mission – maximizing student learning and ensuring all students are growing academically, social-emotionally, and behaviorally EVERY day – has remained the focus.  Whether in-person or online, our students have benefitted from being in school every day and staying connected to their teachers, staff, and peer group.  Many thanks to our staff for their unwavering dedication and the School Board for the supportive stance!

With the goal of increasing voter turnout on March 9, we have been sharing factual information/videos through mail, social media, and our website.  We have also hosted several community meetings and met with a number of business owners throughout the District.  I truly believe that open and consistent communication will provide our patrons with the facts they need to make an informed decision on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

Much Gratitude for your continued support, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Big News for the District

Graduation rates have been announced and it is time to celebrate how unique and incredible this District is!  96.7% is a huge achievement, but let’s break it down a little more.  For all cohorts (size of the graduation class at the high school) of 171 students or more, Lakeland has the highest graduation rate in the State of Idaho.  This is something to celebrate!  The other amazing statistic is Mountain View High School’s 5-year cohort graduation rate = 96.4%, soaring above the State of Idaho’s overall graduation rate of 82.1%.  Not only does this beat the State Average by a long shot, this is by far the highest graduation rate for any alternative high school in the State.  This is a testament to the hard work our staff, students, and parents put in every day and we are so proud!

Replacement Instructional (Supplemental) Levy = Tuesday, March 9th

In just a little over one week, voters will head to the polls where they will see the Replacement Levy on the ballot.  This two year Levy is a renewal of the current Levy expiring this year.  After a tax shift at the State level changed the funding mechanism for our Idaho public schools, in 2008 the LJSD began asking the community to support Supplemental Levies every two years.  Local tax dollars, by way of Supplemental Levy, make up 26% of the yearly budget for our schools.  The positive is that our local tax dollars go to our local schools – more local control.

Check out the March 9, 2021 Levy Page on our website for more information

Dear Parents and Patrons of the Lakeland Joint School District,

For our District to be healthy and continue to perform at the exemplary level, we need to maintain a strong support system within our community and provide you with timely, factual information.  As promised, twice per year, at midyear and end of year, we will report back to the community how your levy tax dollars are being spent to improve the learning environment and increase student achievement.  We appreciate the community’s ongoing support and will continue to publish the semi-annual report to maintain healthy transparency.

While the LJSD is known for its academically rigorous educational program, priority on school safety and security, and fiscally responsible approach, this fall has definitely presented our district and its families with unprecedented challenges–academically, socially, and economically. Our entire educational system, as we know it, was turned upside down last spring and we were also forced to cut 6% from our district budgets. Our district responded in a predictably Lakeland way – school and home worked together to maintain the focus on what was best for students.  While we were able to maintain our instructional integrity through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year with staffing and programs, the budgetary holdbacks forced the district to place several programs on hold until funding is restored.  Nonetheless, our District has been a shining example of individualizing educational opportunities to meet families where they are – we developed a fully online education program for all students K-12, as well as provided in-person learning at all 11 schools 5 days a week all yearWhat a blessing the Lakeland Joint School District has been for our community! This unparalleled approach to meeting the needs of all students was only accomplished through the collaboration and commitment of our dedicated staff, generous parents, and local patrons.

Please take a few minutes to read the Accountability Report linked in the image below.  Thank you for your continued support, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent of Schools

Twice every year, Superintendent, Dr. Meyer publishes an accountability report to provide the community with an opportunity to view the progress in the District.  Using taxpayer dollars fiscally and responsibly with a transparent approach is the goal we set to achieve. Jumping into 2021!

We are off to a great start in the new year.  Our first semester has come to a close and we are looking forward to warmer weather and an awesome second semester.  Our students are deep into learning and have been successful in navigating this unusual year.  We thank our parents and community for the unwavering support they have provided this year!

Levy Info

On March 9, 2021, the District will have a Replacement Instructional Levy on the ballot.

  • This $9.52 million Levy is a renewal and continuation of current District-wide educational, athletic, and extracurricular programs
  • The Lakeland Board of Trustees voted to run a levy that would not increase your District tax rate

With the tremendous growth in our community, the school tax rate continues to decline and we anticipate a flat impact to our taxpayers.  What can you do now?  The window is open to request your absentee ballot and register to vote if you haven’t already.  It is important to note that you must request a new absentee ballot each year.  We are continuously updating our website with important information that you should know about the upcoming Levy.  Our District remains one of the top in the state because of the strong community support we receive.

How Does this Levy Affect your Taxes?

We want our community to have a clear understanding of how the Replacement Levy will affect your taxes.  Our CFO, Brian Wallace has a short video to explain the School District taxes on your yearly statement.  Check it out!

Mountain View High School Students are Commissioners in the Making

Recently, seniors from Mountain View High School attended a mock planning and zoning hearing as part of their Government Class.  Learning about their civic responsibility is just one of the valuable lessons learned for this course.  The Coeur d’Alene Press ran an excellent article about our seniors experience.  Click on the picture from the Coeur d’Alene Press below to read more.

Presidential Scholar Nominees

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.  This year, three of our Timberlake High School seniors have been nominated for this prestigious award.  Please join us in giving them a huge CONGRATULATIONS for their hard work and dedication to academic excellence.

Free Meal Program Continues Through the End of the School Year

Reminder to our community that the District will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch to all children in our community five days a week!

Finishing 2020 on a Good Note

Dear LJSD Parents,

As we begin holiday break, I am reflecting on just how much we have accomplished in 2020.  With the help of our strong families and dedicated Lakeland staff, we have successfully kept our students in school five days a week!!  While this has not been an easy feat and many obstacles have had to be addressed, I am so proud of our District’s commitment to provide a stable educational environment for our students.  We are blessed with the flexibility and gratitude families have shown towards everyone in the District.  Though 2020 has thrown us personal and professional challenges we never would have imagined, the support shown to our schools is something we can all be proud of.  During the next two weeks, I hope you find time to relax, decompress, and enjoy your family and our many blessings.  We look forward to a bright new year and a great second semester!

Sending well wishes for a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!  Much Gratitude, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

Fall Season in our Schools

We have finally seen some snow in this very mild fall season and our students take full advantage of the fun that this weather brings.  The holiday spirit is in full swing and has brought a brightness to this difficult year.  Check out just a few of the awesome happenings going on over the past few weeks in Lakeland!

Reminder About Grab & Go Meals During Holiday Break

Our Child Nutrition Services staff wants to remind families that during holiday breaks, there will be no Grab & Go Meal pick ups.  School resumes on Monday, January 4, 2021 and Grab & Go Meals will start again and continue through the end of the school year.

Veterans Day Celebrations in the District

Veterans Day looked a little different this year in our District.  Instead of assemblies in each school to honor our veterans and invite the community in, there were in-class celebrations, virtual assemblies, and other creative celebrations.  Check out a couple of these video programs below.

Lakeland High School Volleyball Team  Wins State!

The Lakeland High School Volleyball Team traveled to Kimberly, Idaho last weekend and went undefeated the entire tournament!  The team, coaches, and families were so amazing during the entire tournament that the team also won the Sportsmanship Award, which is a great honor.  We cannot say loudly enough how proud we are of this team.  Way to go Hawks!

Check out the very kind email from a volunteer at Kimberly High School that spoke to the great things from everyone representing our District:

First let me answer what I assume is the question on your mind Who is this guy??”.  My wife (Kathy) and I were handling admissions (ticket takers) at the State Volleyball Tournament in Kimberly last weekend.  Congratulations to the team and coaches on the win.  I didn’t get to see much of the play but I was very impressed with what I did see.  We also what to congratulate the team, fans and other “Lakelanders” on receiving the Sportsmanship Trophy. We were, indeed, very impressed with the behavior and demeanor of all involved.  Some little things that stood out. As the team and others entered the building they all clearly showed me their ID badges and pronounced names clearly.  Nearly all replied to my “thank you, good luck”.  The fans also were courteous and friendly during any interaction I had with them.  We were impressed with the mask compliance.  You have no idea how many times Kathy and I had to remind people to get mask on and keep the nose covered.  We got a number of disgusted looks and rude comments from some of the fans.  The Lakeland Hawk fans in the bleachers were very supportive of the team and ALWAYS very positive and respectful!  At the end of the day Saturday several fans and players thanked us for our time.  We were very impressed!  Overall, your community should be very, very proud of Lakeland High, the players and coaches and the fans who were there cheering them on.  Please convey our thoughts to the players, coaches and other support staff, and the community at large.

Thank you, it was a pleasure to serve you.  I sincerely hope that we did a good job on our end and that you all enjoyed your time at Kimberly High School.

Dr. Dave Makings

Congratulations to our Newest FFA Students!

Timberlake High School FFA students competed in the recent North Idaho District FFA competition in Greenhand Knowledge. The team of Carlene Ross, Ethan Howard and Gracie Haeder placed second!! This is a huge accomplishment for these freshmen students!

March 9, 2021 Replacement Instructional (Supplemental) Levy

In the next few months, the District will be sharing out information via our Website and through the mail, creating mini-videos to answer questions we most frequently receive, and working to educate our community on this upcoming Levy.  This is a REPLACEMENT of the current Instructional Levy in our District (not an additional levy).  We encourage the community to call the District Office with any questions they may have.  Check out the postcard coming soon to your mailboxes HERE!

A Week to be Thankful!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we shift into Thanksgiving break, I am reminded just how much we have to be grateful for.  Despite this being the most challenging year I can remember in education, our District’s families have coalesced to face this overwhelming pandemic together.  People in our District have been respectful of the LJSD Reopen Plan and have done their best to follow the guidelines.  This has allowed us to stay in a consistent Yellow Level of Operation, with students being able to attend five days a week in-person, if parents desired.  This is not true with other districts throughout the state.  The consistency and support for our students has truly been a blessing.  Although we have had several hurdles to overcome and an uptick in cases recently, our families continue to reach out to staff to offer support and appreciation for their dedication and continued compassion.  This is truly a special place to be.  Next week, please take the opportunity to look back on our year so far and acknowledge just how many positive blessings we have in this District, even in the most difficult of times.  I hope you take the time to really enjoy your family and take a break from the daily demands of our lives.  This is the perfect time to model rest and rejuvenation for our kids so they know how important it is to unwind for the week.  Thank you for supporting the District and working together to provide the best education for each and every one of our students.  Much gratitude for the LJSD family, Dr. Meyer, Superintendent

1-1 Chromebook Rollout — Completion This Year!

In order to best meet the needs of all students in the district, whether that is in-person, blended learning, or completely online, we have stepped up the 1-to-1 Chromebook program started three years ago.  Initially funded by Instructional Levy dollars, we have used the CARES funds to expedite the 1-1 Chromebooks for students.  We made this decision based on the possibility of having to move to the Orange Level of Operation, which would require our students to have Chromebooks in order to participate in their classroom from home every other day.  Although we have been able to stay in the Yellow Level of Operation, 5 days a week in-person, we continue to utilize the Chromebooks as a tool in the classroom, as well as at home, with online learning, homework assignments, or in self-quarantine.  Thankfully, this proactive planning will ensure our students are prepared for whatever educational circumstances this year may bring.  The delivery date continues to be moved back due to Covid issues with the manufacturers, but you will hear more specific information from your building principals once the Chromebooks arrive.

CHANGE to Transportation Guidelines

Due to a shortage of both bus drivers and buses to transport our student riders, we are unable to maintain the two students per seat limit we hoped to maintain during the pandemic.  As outlined in the parent permission to ride waiver, bus transportation is on a voluntary basis and we will always attempt to do the best we can with the number of drivers and bus routes to maintain social distancing.  Parents who are not comfortable with the number of students on the bus are able to transport their children instead.  Due to the new circumstances, I am recommending a change to the transportation section of the LJSD Reopen Plan at the next Board meeting, Tuesday, December 8. If you would like to ask about your child’s bus route, please call the Transportation Department at:  (208) 687-0221

If you want to review the transportation waiver from the beginning of the year, I have included it here: Transportation Waiver

PAUSE on Grab and Go Meals

Reminder to families that during the upcoming holiday breaks (November 23-27 & December 21 – January 1) there will be no Grab & Go Meals services for children in our District.  For more information, visit our Nutrition Services Website.

Free Testing Available for COVID -19

There are free COVID-19 tests available for students whose parent/guardian may be uninsured.  If this is the case for your family, you may contact our head nurse, Judy Gerstenberger @ jgerstenberger@lakeland272.org. She will assist you in accessing testing.
